Sovereign AI: a country can own its AI
On the main stage of Lao Digital Week 2026, our Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer, Peter A. Moelgaard, presented Sovereign AI — A Country Can Own Its AI: why it matters who holds AI, what makes it sovereign, and why Lao PDR can be among the first nations to own its AI.
A country can own its AI
On Saturday 24 October, Peter A. Moelgaard took the main stage of Lao Digital Week 2026 at Lao-ITECC. He set out what AI has become, from chat to autonomous agents, and why it matters who holds the compute: whoever holds the compute holds the decisions.
An ecosystem, not a centre
Sovereign AI is the nation’s ecosystem — government, companies, universities and people — building AI capacity together, with data, models and keys at home. Two films in Lao, What Is Sovereign AI and What Lao PDR Gains, carried it to the audience in their own language.
From power to power
Compute follows energy, and Lao PDR holds the first layer of sovereign AI in surplus: clean hydropower. The power that leaves the country today as electricity can stay home and work as intelligence.
A journey together
Evergreen AI is building the first sovereign data centre in Lao PDR, and the invitation went to everyone: wherever you work, help build national AI capacity and its enablers — energy, compute, data and people.
